Background to the Study
The issue of substance abuse among adolescents is a critical concern in today’s society, with significant implications for the physical and mental well-being of young individuals. Substance abuse encompasses the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs, and is often associated with a range of adverse consequences, from impaired academic performance to increased risk of accidents and injuries. Substance abuse among adolescents is a growing concern globally, and it poses significant health risks to individuals and communities. In Nigeria, particularly in the South-South region, substance abuse has become a prevalent issue among the youth population, including adolescents. The misuse and excessive consumption of drugs not only impact the academic performance and personal well-being of students but also contribute to broader social and public health challenges (Afolayan, 2019). As highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO), adolescents represent a vulnerable population susceptible to the lure of substances due to various developmental factors (WHO, 2018). The transition from childhood to adolescence is characterized by biological, psychological, and social changes that shape the trajectory of an individual’s life, including their vulnerability to substance abuse. Adolescents are at a stage where they seek independence and often experiment with risky behaviors, making them particularly susceptible to substance use and its associated risks (Jessor, 1991). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines substance abuse as the “harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.” It encompasses various substances such as cannabis, opioids, cocaine, amphetamines, and prescription medications, among others (WHO, 2018). Drug abuse has both short-term and long-term health consequences, ranging from physical and mental health issues to social and economic problems. Substance abuse is a global public health concern that affects individuals, families, and communities. In Nigeria, substance abuse has become a major social problem, particularly among young people, including adolescent students in secondary schools. According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), drug abuse is prevalent among Nigerian youths, with an estimated 14.3 million people aged between 15 and 64 years using drugs in 2018 (NDLEA, 2019). The use of psychoactive substances such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine has been associated with various health risks, including mental health problems, infectious diseases, and physical harm (UNODC, 2021). The prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents is a pressing public health issue. Adolescents, typically aged between 10 and 19 years, are at a critical stage in their development, and substance abuse during this period can have far-reaching consequences. Studies have shown that the rates of substance abuse among adolescents vary across different regions, and Akwa Ibom is no exception. According to a survey conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in Nigeria, substance abuse is a growing concern among Nigerian youth, including those in Akwa Ibom. The report highlights that a significant percentage of Nigerian adolescents have experimented with drugs and alcohol (National Bureau of Statistics, 2020). In Ibiaku Itam, Akwa Ibom, like many other communities worldwide, substance abuse among adolescents is a significant concern. The reasons behind this growing issue are multifaceted and interconnected with broader societal factors, such as poverty, unemployment, and limited access to education and health services (Ibanga & Abasiubong, 2015). Scholars have noted that the use of psychoactive substances by adolescents in Nigeria, including Akwa Ibom State, is not limited to urban areas; rather, it extends to rural communities, including Ibiaku Itam (Aliyu, 2017). The implications of substance abuse for this age group are dire, encompassing not only health problems but also poor educational outcomes and the perpetuation of a cycle of addiction that can affect future generations. Understanding the factors influencing substance abuse among adolescents in the specific context of Ibiaku Itam, Itu, Akwa Ibom, is crucial for several reasons. First, the unique cultural, economic, and social factors of this community may contribute to distinct patterns of substance abuse among its adolescents. Tailoring prevention and intervention strategies to address these specific factors is essential for their effectiveness. Second, the implications of substance abuse among adolescents extend beyond individual harm. Substance abuse affects families, schools, and communities as a whole. The negative consequences of substance abuse may include increased school dropout rates, juvenile delinquency, criminal activity, and strained family dynamics. By addressing substance abuse within the community, it is possible to create a more supportive and healthy environment for adolescents to thrive. Finally, this research is crucial for policy development and resource allocation. Local authorities, educators, and healthcare professionals need accurate data to make informed decisions about allocating resources for prevention and intervention programs. An in-depth study of substance abuse in Ibiaku Itam can provide the necessary insights to develop targeted strategies to combat the issue effectively. Substance abuse among adolescents is influenced by a myriad of factors. These factors can be broadly categorized into five main areas: peer pressure, family dynamics, socioeconomic conditions, psychological factors, and environmental influences. The impact of substance abuse on the mental health of adolescents is a growing concern. Adolescents who abuse substances are at a higher risk of developing mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety (Lynskey, Agrawal, & Heath, 2010). Substance abuse can exacerbate preexisting mental health conditions and hinder emotional and psychological development. Substance abuse can disrupt an adolescent’s social life and relationships. It can lead to strained relationships with family members and peers, contributing to feelings of isolation and alienation (Mason et al., 2010). In some cases, adolescents engaged in substance abuse may be drawn into delinquent behavior and criminal activity, further damaging their social connections (Wasserman, 2003). The academic consequences of substance abuse are significant. Adolescents who abuse substances often experience declining academic performance, truancy, and an increased likelihood of dropping out of school (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020). Substance abuse impairs cognitive functioning, making it difficult for adolescents to concentrate and succeed academically. Addressing these negative effects is crucial not only for the well-being of the individual adolescents but also for the broader community and society at large. Effective prevention and intervention strategies must consider the holistic impact of substance abuse on adolescents. Preventing and intervening in adolescent substance abuse requires a multi-pronged approach, involving schools, families, and communities. Various strategies have been developed to address this issue, tailored to the unique needs of adolescents and their environments. Schools play a crucial role in preventing substance abuse among adolescents. Evidence-based prevention programs delivered in the school setting have been effective in reducing substance abuse (Botvin, Griffin, & Nichols, 2006). These programs focus on providing students with the knowledge and skills to resist peer pressure, make healthy choices, and cope with stress in ways that do not involve substance abuse. Involving families in prevention efforts is essential, as family dynamics significantly influence an adolescent’s susceptibility to substance abuse. Family-based programs, such as the Strengthening Families Program (Kumpfer, Alvarado, & Whiteside, 2003), aim to enhance parenting skills, improve family communication, and strengthen family bonds. These programs help parents become effective advocates for their children’s well-being. Community-based programs target substance abuse prevention at the neighborhood or community level. These programs involve collaborations between schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and local organizations. They may include community education campaigns, after-school programs, and recreational activities aimed at keeping adolescents engaged and away from substances (Spoth, Randall, & Shin, 2008). For adolescents already struggling with substance abuse, intervention strategies are critical. These strategies may involve counseling, therapy, or rehabilitation programs. Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are commonly used approaches to help adolescents understand the consequences of their substance use and develop healthier coping mechanisms (Burlingame, McClendon, & Alonso, 2011).
