Data Capturing: A Tool for Analysis of Health Information

Data capturing is an efficient way of collecting, presenting, organizing and storing health records information such that healthcare professionals can access for better decision-making and improved patient care. However, despite the recognized significance of health records, there are challenges associated with the traditional paper-based systems, as noted by Adebayo and Adekanmbi (2017). These challenges include inefficiencies, data redundancy, and difficulties in accessibility. Moreover, in the digital era, there is a growing need for innovative approaches to health records management (Oyeyemi et al., 2020). In the specific context of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, there is a gap in the literature regarding the effectiveness of current health records management practices. Scholars like Ojo and Madukwe (2019) emphasize the need for tailored solutions in Nigerian healthcare settings to address unique challenges and promote efficient information management. Given the limitations of traditional health records systems, exploring data capturing methods becomes imperative. Ogunbanjo and Mammen (2016) argue that embracing technological advancements, including data capturing, can enhance the accuracy and accessibility of health records. In Nigeria, where healthcare systems are evolving, the adoption of such methods is crucial (Igbo and Anionwu, 2018). Building upon the existing literature, Oyeyemi and Adesina (2017) stress the transformative impact of electronic health records (EHRs) and data capturing technologies on healthcare delivery in Nigeria. They argue that such technological interventions not only streamline information management but also have the potential to enhance the overall efficiency of healthcare systems. In the Nigerian healthcare landscape, where resource constraints and infrastructure challenges are notable, the work of Osunyomi et al. (2019) underscores the need for cost-effective and sustainable solutions. They suggest that adopting data capturing methods can contribute to a more resource-efficient approach, aligning with the economic realities faced by many healthcare institutions in the country. Furthermore, considering the diverse and dynamic nature of healthcare in Nigeria, Okafor and Nwachukwu (2018) emphasize the role of context-specific strategies. They argue that any proposed health records management solution should be adaptable to the local nuances and cultural intricacies of the Nigerian healthcare system. The current study aligns with these perspectives, aiming to bridge the gap between the theoretical advantages of data capturing methods and their practical implementation in the specific context of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. By integrating insights from both international and Nigerian scholars, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with modernizing health records management in a Nigerian healthcare setting. In light of the above, this study aims to investigate the potential benefits of implementing data capturing methods in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. By examining the existing literature and incorporating perspectives from both international and Nigerian scholars, this research seeks to contribute to the discourse on optimizing health records management in the Nigerian healthcare context.
